From Partner to Hero: My Journey with K9 Tambo

For seven years, Tambo wasn’t just my partner — he was my shadow, my teammate, and eventually, my family. As a Police Officer, I trusted him wand he trusted me. The bond between a handler and their K9 is second to none. We spend more time with them than with our spouses, our kids, or our friends.

Tambo dedicated his career to protecting others. He searched thousands of vehicles and responded to hundreds of calls for service, always ready, always focused. His drive was unmatched. Whether we were working at major events or supporting other law enforcement operations, Tambo’s commitment never wavered.

By 2022, years of service had taken their toll. A torn ACL forced him into retirement, but his work ethic never faded. Even after hanging up his badge, he still wanted to come to work with me every day. His body might have slowed down, but his will to serve never did.

That same year, Project K9 Hero stepped in for the first time. Tambo needed surgery for his injury, and they covered more than $7,000 in medical costs. Their mission — providing lifetime medical care for retired police and military working dogs — became personal to me. I saw firsthand how critical it was to have support when our heroes could no longer serve.

After retirement, Tambo took on a new role as an ambassador for the organization. We traveled to events, sharing his story to raise awareness about the needs of working dogs after service. We stood on the field at Camden Yards representing Project K9 Hero during a Baltimore Orioles game, and we were honored at a Philadelphia Phillies “Salute to Service” night on his eleventh birthday. He had found a new way to serve — by inspiring others.

Then, in July 2025, everything changed.

Tambo suddenly became lethargic, vomited, and struggled to stand. I rushed him to the emergency vet, where they discovered a ruptured hemangioma on his spleen that was causing internal bleeding. Emergency surgery was our only option.

During the operation, multiple masses were found on his spleen, and the doctors feared the cancer had already spread to his liver. We waited anxiously for biopsy results, holding onto hope.

Tambo survived the surgery and made it through the night. By morning, he was stable and even began eating again — a small but meaningful victory. I knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, and I didn’t know how much time we had left, but I was determined to make every moment count.

Once again, Jason Johnson and Project K9 Hero stepped in without hesitation. Jason’s words were simple: “We got Tambo 100%, whatever he needs.” It was the second time they had saved his life, and my gratitude was beyond measure.

In the weeks that followed, Tambo returned to his favorite routines — barking at squirrels, scanning the yard for rabbits, and greeting my young son each morning. These simple moments became priceless memories.

Now bravely battling an aggressive cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, Tambo continues to travel the country advocating for better care for America’s working K9s — proudly representing the thousands of other silent four-legged heroes who serve without question.

Tambo is more than a partner. He is my best friend, my family, and my hero. His journey is one of service, sacrifice, and resilience — and I am proud to have walked every step of it by his side.
